Hope for stalking victims
I've been the victim of an internet stalker for over four years now. When it first began I lived in New Orleans, La. and was essentially told that I had no recourse because the person harassing me lived in another state. But, thankfully, I've been granted a restraining order through the California Superior Court and have a reasonable amount of safety. When the issue of stalking first arose, it was a crime that most states around the country jumped on and made a real priority. Unfortunately, the issue of cyber-stalking has been largely over-looked or even ignored. Unless the person being victimized had proof in the form of the other person actually threatening her life, the police would treat it as nothing of real importance. As in my case, the man involved actually hacked into my computer and stole personal emails, as well as sending me repeated, harassing emails. But, without that written threat, I was told nothing could be done. Well, that's quickly changing! Not only are cyber-stalking crimes becoming more and more relevant in the eyes of law makers, the theft of email is listed among things considered a terrorist act. Finally, things are catching up! If you are being harassed by email, do not stop until you are granted a restraining order! Do not take no for an answer when anyone tells you nothing can be done! I now have legal recourse if I discover this man is still trying to find me or hacking my computer. I wish I'd had this protection sooner, but I do have it now and that's what counts! If you (like me) find the police less than helpful - go directly to your nearest courthouse and ask how to file yourself. It's more than worth the hassle when your freedom and safety are at stake! |
